MAKE A DECISION

IT’S SAFE
Because the cord blood is collected after your baby is born, it won’t affect your baby or change the delivery process

IT’S FREE  (There is no charge)
The cord blood bank covers the cost of collecting and storing the blood.

IT’S EASY
Once you decide to donate, your kit will be sent to your home. Just complete the forms and then take them, and the kit, with you when you go to the hospital to give birth.

IT’S CONFIDENTIAL
All information about you and your baby will be kept completely confidential.

REQUEST YOUR KIT

To donate your baby’s cord blood, you must request your free collection kit at least 4-6 weeks before your due date. You can request a kit by completing the online form.  You should receive your Cord Blood Collection kit approximately 4 weeks prior to your due date.

Cord blood donation is currently not possible in many communities. ITxM collects cord blood only at participating hospitals.

If you plan to deliver at a hospital that is not a participating hospital,  please visit the National Marrow Donor Program's remote site collection program website.

COMPLETE COLLECTION KIT FORMS

Your paperwork will arrive in the mail about four weeks before your baby is due. Complete the family health history form and consent form to indicate that you have decided to donate your baby’s cord blood. Then take them with you, when you go to the hospital to give birth.  All of the information you provide to our bank, your blood sample and your baby’s cord blood will be handled confidentially by the Doctors, Nurses, Medical Technicians and other trained staff at the ITxMCS Cord Blood Services.

DONATE

If you choose to donate, the left over blood will be collected from your side (mother’s side) of the umbilical cord, after the cord has been cut and clamped on the baby’s side. Once the cord and placenta have been drained of the left over blood, the tissue will be discarded according to the hospital routine. The collection is done by your doctor or nurse, after they determine that you and your baby are in good condition.

You will also be asked to have a small sample of your blood tested. These tests are required to assure that the cord blood will be safe to give to another person, just as standard blood donations are tested to be sure the public blood supply is safe for people having surgery or who have been injured. All test results are strictly confidential. You will be assigned a random identification number, and the testing laboratory will only have that number…they will not be given your name.

Cord blood collection is quick, pain-free, and will not interfere with the routine care of you or your baby. You will not be charged by your doctor, the hospital, the cord blood bank or NMDP website for any part of your donation.
